Windows Driver Updates are very important if you want to have the most error free experience. You may also need driver updates to be able to keep up with browsers, games and many other advances in software.New drivers may be needed after adding a new piece of hardware to your computer as well.1. Download the latest XP driver updates from the hardware manufacturer's website. These will be the most current.Make a folder on your desktop and save it here.* Even with your newly bought device chances are the drivers on the disk included may be an older version than found from the manufacturer.2. Open Device Manager.Click Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > Device Manager (on the Hardware Tab)3. With Device Manager open, locate the hardware devicethat you want to update the drivers for.Note: Navigate through the categories of hardware devices, by clicking the [+] icon. This expands each category tree. Specific hardware devices are listed under the major hardware categories.
4. Right click on the hardware's name or icon and chooseProperties. In this Properties window, click the Driver tab.5. Click the Update Driver button. *The wizard for the XP driver updates will begin6. When Windows asks to connect to Windows Update tosearch for software, choose No. Click the Next button.7. To the "What do you want the wizard to do?" question, choose the Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) radio button and then click the Next button.The next window that appears will be the Please choose your search and installation options window which contains several radio buttons and checkboxes.8. Choose the don't search option. I will choose the driver to install radio button and then click the Next > button.9. Click the Have Disk button on the Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware window.10. Click the Browse button on the Install from Disk dialog box that appeared.In the Locate File dialog box that appears next, navigate to the folder that you extracted as part of the driver download in Step 1 above. There may be multiple folders within the extracted folder so be sure to work your way to the one for Windows XP driver updates.If it exists. It's okay if there isn't a specific XP folder.11. Click the INF file that displays in the file list and click the Open button.12. Click the OK button back on the Install from Disk dialog box.
13. Choose the newly added hardware back on the Select the XP driver updates you want to install for this hardware window and then click the Next button.* If you're prompted with a message warning you about how the device driver may not be compatible with your hardware, click the Yes button to continue installing the driver. Drivers that have not been tested by Microsoft are still okay to use.14. Follow any additional instructions on screen to complete the driver update.15.
